lergy Update for the 2020-2021 School Year
For the 2020-2021 school year, we are a peanut and tree-nut-free school. What this means is that your child will not be allowed to bring in snacks containing any of these ingredients into the school. Absolutely no baked goods will be allowed. All snacks that enter the classroom must have an ingredient label. If your snack item does not have an individual label on it, please make a copy of the ingredient label from the box, and send it in with your child and the snack. Another option would be to take a picture of the ingredient label with your cell phone, email it to me, and I will print it at school. No hand-written notes will be accepted, as I cannot guarantee that the ingredients are 100% accurate. If you tend to send in the same snacks over and over again, but you put them in your own zip lock bag, please send in the ingredient label with your child's name on it. Be sure to write the exact name of the snack on the label as well (e.g. Nabisco Oreos, Snyder's Pretzels, etc.). We will keep these ingredient labels in school and reference them over and over as needed. Any time you change brands (e.g. Oreos vs. Stop & Shop brand sandwich cookies), please send in the new ingredient label. If at all possible, fruits, veggies, and pre-packaged snacks are ideal choices, as they will make the daily process of checking snacks and reading ingredients go more quickly.
Please check all packaging carefully to make sure that peanuts and tree-nuts are not in the snack items being sent in. Likewise, please check to make sure that the snack being sent in was not processed in a plant and/or on the same equipment that also produces foods with these ingredients. We need to worry about cross-contamination. I will be checking snacks daily, and if your child has brought in something that contains any of these ingredients, he/she will be unable to eat it. Students will be escorted to the nurse for a piece of fruit that day, and the snack you sent in will be sent home. If you don't have the food label from the item sent in (actual package or photocopy of ingredients, not handwritten), your child will not be allowed to eat the snack in our classroom.
Please understand that the ingredients which are not allowed into our school and classroom can change as medical information is updated on students or as new students move in. I will alert you if there any changes and/or additions to this information. The safety of children with food allergies is taken very seriously in our classroom and the Igo School. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] and/or our school nurse, Erin Murray, RN, at [email protected].
Thank you for your cooperation,
Jill Swanton
